Calvary Updates

Updated: Mar 24

Hello there,

Psalm 122:1 I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”

St. Patrick's Potluck

What a good time we enjoyed last night at our potluck!  Gina’s corn beef dish was awesome and the other additions complimented so well.  Thanks to all who helped and made time in your day to be a part.  I love it when we can sit around a table and fellowship and laugh.  If we are going to grow deeper, we need to interact with each other outside of Sunday morning.  From that angle the event was a huge success.  Icing on the cake was seeing new faces.  Those who are out of church or don’t understand the value of Christian fellowship (koinonia) need to see how Christ connects us one to the other.  It’s a beautiful thing.

Connecting people to Jesus first, Calvary second!

It is more difficult to connect with people than it was a few years ago.  People you walk past  are often on their phones.  The younger generation often use earbuds listening to music via their phones.  If you’re in the habit of greeting people, like I am, you often get no response because their ears are occupied!  But don’t give up, we have to be the ones to keep reaching out. If you don’t know a neighbor well, pray for ways to connect through acts of kindness or common interests.  Be friendly and expectant.  Be observant and prayerful.

Looking for some creative ways to see people join us?

  1. ) Invite them to view our messages on YouTube.  (search at Calvary Church Pekin).  2)  Or very simply say, “Would you come to church with me?  I can pick you up.”  3) It starts with developing a friendship.  Ask God to give you a greater burden for people to come to know

Christ.

Chronological Bible reading: you should have reached Joshua 4 this Sunday.   Here is a link for this reading schedule.  https://www.biblestudytools.com/bible-reading-plan/chronological.html

I look forward to seeing you all this weekend as we delve into Part 2 of the parable of the sower.  The message is entitled a “Good and Noble Heart,” taken from:

Luke 8:15: But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

Schedule for Sunday, 9:15 am Donuts and Coffee, 9:30 am  Sunday School, 10:30 am Worship.  Gina is leading us on the fruits of the Spirit. The upstairs class is exploring Francis Schaeffer's video series, “How Shall We Then Live?”  By the way, you can look up, “How Shall We Then Live” online.  You can find the lessons we watch on YouTube.

Wednesday Prayer, 5:30 PM.  We need your voice!    Add your voice to ours.  “Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live” (Psalm 116:2).  We are stronger together!  Come and check it out!

Notes of Encouragement

We are looking to kick off what I’d like to call “bless you boxes.”   Cindy Timm has labeled most of our “cubby boxes” just off the sanctuary.  The idea is to ask God to put people on your heart that you could drop a note to.  Sometimes all we need is a kind word from someone else to lift our spirits.  If you see we missed giving someone a box, let us know.

Trivia Question: What stopped the growth of the seed in the first two soils?

Praying for you,

Pastor Frank Winfrey
