This event was prophesied by the prophet Zechariah in chapter 9, and verse 9:
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Some interesting facts about Zechariah. His words and the prophet Haggai's shook the Jewish people from their lethargy to rebuild the temple. The Jews rebuilding efforts had faltered after the ministry Ezra. The work had been dormant for 16 years. Zechariah's words called them to repent and to be obedient to their assigned task. A rebuilt temple was needed to awaken their worship and fidelity to their God.
Do you believe our nation could use a wake up call? We could use another prophet like Zechariah in the flesh, but in the meantime we have his words on the page to call us to keep looking forward to what God intends to do now. God has not forgotten us and he asks us to be at the ready and expectant for his second return. The words of Zechariah are quoted more often in the gospels than any other Old Testament prophet. The New Testament quotes portions of Zechariah 71 times and 27 of those are found in the gospels.
Zechariah 9:9 should have registered with the Jewish people and let them know that their Messiah had come on that first Palm Sunday, but they missed it. Isn't it sad that even now with all the validation that the gospel records have received through archeology and manuscript authority, we still miss the work Jesus accomplished? Jesus fulfilled his role as a High Priest to restore our broken relationship with God. The redeemed are forgiven through his priestly ministry. They are made a part of his eternal kingdom by his kingship, which will be more fully revealed at his second coming. For more on this kingdom work read on in Zechariah.
"I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth" (Zechariah 9:10).
Jerusalem is certainly playing a central role in our current headlines. In his second visit to this planet, Christ will exhibit his divine authority and rule for a thousand years from Jerusalem. As you read further you will find more end time prophecies that powerfully reveal the future ministry of King Jesus. This Easter season will highlight the ministry of Jesus the Servant, who in first visit came humbly or as the text says, "lowly and riding on a donkey,."

We have set a lofty goal to read through the Bible in a year. How about this to encourage you from Proverbs 7:2: Keep my commandments and live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Today's readings were Exodus 38, Proverbs 14, John 17 and Philippians 1. If you are looking for a different reading plan, you might enjoy:

Can you find a passage from Zechariah repeated in the New Testament? Tell it to me on Sunday what you found.
In Jesus joy,
