I John 3... 19And by this we will know that we belong to the truth, and will assure our hearts in His presence ... because we keep His commandments and do what is pleasing in His sight. 23And this is His commandment: that we should believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we should love one another just as He commanded us.
Why do carpenters use a tape measure? Because they want to ensure that the board they are altering will fit in the slot where it is needed. It is just one board, but it needs to fit and meet a specific role in the construction blueprint. A stud in a wall is necessary to provide support and strength. Most studs are installed at 16" increments. This building standard allows for proper wall integrity and makes it easier for the installers of the dry wall to follow a pattern and speed up their process in completing the interior walls.
The Bible tells us that God is building his church, and each believer plays a role in strengthening and standing with others within the body of Christ. When each member fulfills their role and fits in and functions according to the plan of God, they make it possible for others to thrive and thus ensure a healthy growing church.
If you know Jesus as your Savior, may I give you two blueprint instructions from the mind of God found in verse 23 above. These instructions will help provide clarity for you so that you may measure the accuracy of your obedience. 23And this is His commandment: that we should believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we should love one another just as He commanded us.
The starting point is belief in the one that God has ordained to rescue us from our sin debt to God. John 6:29: Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.” And the second examination we need to make is in our consistency in loving one another. John speaks about love as a central to the blueprint of God multiple times. If anyone claims to be in the light but hates his brother, he is still in the darkness (I John 2:9). This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another ( I John 3:11). We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers ( I John 3:14).
This section of scripture does not include the complete picture of God's directives for the believer. But it does give you valuable insight in two areas of your spiritual health that can be accurately measured with the aid of the Holy Spirit. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment (John 16:8).
