How much do you value a clean conscience?
How much do you value a clean conscience?

The title for our message this week is "Setting my Heart at Rest." We will be drawing from I John 3. A key verse for this topic is verse 19, This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence.  Knowing we will one day stand in the presence of a holy and all seeing God and give an account, should make us careful to order our steps.

Reflecting a godly character day in and day out, is a calling that challenges all of us. No one knows our personal frailties better than we do. We all know areas in our Christian walk where we can do better. To keep a proper focus we need to check our attitudes and behaviors against the yardstick of truth. If I am going to stay on the straight and narrow, I make adjustments to my life when the truth demands it. I don't make excuses. I simply submit.

One useful measuring stick is found in verse 17, If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? When it is clear that we are not stingy with our money and willing to share with brothers and sisters in need can "reassure our heart before him (God)" (ESV v.19). And it is important to recognize that just because we are good today, it does not mean that we are good tomorrow. Never believe that we can neglect regular truth check ups. Especially since the Bible clearly tells us, "the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it" (Jeremiah 17:9). If our desire is to have a clean conscience, God is always ready to help us in that pursuit, especially when we are open to correction.

I love how John concludes this treatise. I John 3:21-24, Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

In fact, we plan to take this application seriously. We will have a slightly shortened service this Sunday to allow for some valuable instrospection immediately following.
