Mark 15:27-34
They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left. And the scripture was fulfilled which says, "And he was numbered with the transgressors." Those passing by were hurling abuse at him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who were going to destroy the temple, and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!" In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking him among themselves saying, "he saved others: he cannot save himself. Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may now believe! Those who were crucified with him were also insulting him. When the sixth hour came (noon), darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour (3pm). At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ELOI ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" which is translated MY GOD, MY GOD WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"
Today is the day that God dealt decisively with our sin problem. John the Baptist powerfully declared to the crowd as he saw Jesus coming to the Jordan River, "Look, the Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world."
That first Good Friday, the crowd, gathered to see a spectacle, had no idea what the divine plan of God was enacted on that cross. Fewer and fewer in our cultural understand what Christ secured for us that Easter weekend. It's important that we celebrate Christ humility and sacrifice to rescue others. Hebrews tells us in chapter 12. "And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
It is amazing to think about, but you were on his mind as he died today. He had great joy in knowing that he could rescue you and me!!! Even if you don't join with us make it a point to get to church and worship with others this Easter.
